Less than ten months ago, both my parents were still alive on earth. At 93 and 90, respectively, I figured they were pretty strong and would be with us a few more years. But God had other plans.

I remember a friend telling me about her season of caring for aging parents, about driving them here and there, about their living in her home, and her being their primary caretaker. While home schooling her children, helping her husband's business, and caring for parents, she felt her life was so full she couldn't see the end of it.
It was non-stop pressure for her, and she felt the weight of it keenly. But as I was sharing with her about my duties of running about taking care of my parents, and my children and my fatigue, she quietly and solemnly spoke these words: "You wake up one day, and they're gone. All of a sudden, it's over."

Very true. While in the midst of the sound and fury, signifying all the world at the moment, you open your eyes, you receive that call, you open the door, and those dear ones over whom you labored and wept are gone.

Then come the wandering days: you wonder as you wander about, unable to focus on the new normal. You begin thinking about the "never agains:" never again will you hear their greeting, their peculiar phrases, their words of wisdom. Never again will you receive the gaze of a parent to his beloved child. And gone are the shared moments that you cannot have with anyone else in the world.
No one else understands that press of the hand, the personal joke, the history behind the little bits of childhood verse. Tears flow, and wisdom dictates to let them come. They clean the heart, and melt away the inhuman in us.

The memories start knocking at the doors to our souls, and, if we're wise, we let them in, and allow them to dwell with us, and establish rooms with us. They're quiet, those "memory-tenants." They don't ask for much, but they do pour out much balm and offer kind words amid the tears. They bring a kind of comfort in the night: to have known, to have loved, to have been loved.

I miss my parents. They were good parents, and I am grateful for them. They gave many lasting gifts to their family. I hope that the good legacy they unwittingly passed down to us will be filtered through the sands of time and show up in future generations. With 3 children and 9 grandchildren, perhaps some of the truth, goodness and beauty of their lives will have an influence, and color future peoples with their particular shades and hues.

Au revoir Pa (August 23, 1925 - November 29, 2018)
Au revoir Ma (May 5, 1928 - September 19, 2019)

Your children love you and miss you. And we certainly won't forget you. No : "A coup de petoche, I have a record garage" will live on... And so shall "Alors Ma!"

Forgive the silence.... but as the title states, we are indeed too busy living, to write about life in the family.

Birthdays have come and gone, and lots of growing up has occurred, by adults as well as by children.

So many events, that are indeed traceable by photo or narration, have been experienced, but the most significant are the ones that receive no fanfare, no shutters clicking, no breathless explanation of conversations or happenings. They are the quiet, under-cover currents of understanding, revelation, and workings-out of wisdom, tears and wrestlings, lonely walks marveling at the birds' calls, sprouting flowers in the garden, and the "Ah-ha!" moments in following arguments in a book.

God is not silent in all these things. In fact, His megaphone of pain, quietness, loneliness, misunderstanding, and suffering of many kinds is a welcome gift to answer the delirious busyness and distraction that we all face and are tempted to face at any moment. These draw our attention back to where they will bring us the greatest profit: to His face, His Word, to His presence.

So, God is at work in the Hellwig family. Many good things, many we would call bad, painful, sorrowful, even heartbreaking. But, He, in His mysterious way, turns things on their heads and brings good. No presumptions, here, but we know Whom we have believed, and are persuaded that He is able to keep that which we've committed to Him against that day....that day, when all will be made right again.

It is in the struggle that we grow. We labor that we might give birth to blessing. May we not be afraid of the hard work.

In short, we Hellwigs are in the struggle, but hanging together as much as we can and as much as He wills for us for now.

Briefs:
Timothy is back from FL, visiting us for a month, and we are so happy to spend time with him. What a sweetheart.
Oliver and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this fall. In the words of some not-so-great poet at some point in time:
"Ah, how swiftly doth fly the years, 'tis but an instant hence since we bade each our "I do's" The swollen buds doth burst with life and God worketh as He may choose"

(As I said, not-so-great poetry...it abounds around here.)

But God's blessings most certainly do abound...every day! The very last picture taken, under protest and amid many sighs and complaints, was the one that made the cut!
A very special one indeed, as our last family photo before Arianne marries her best friend Brian, on December 18th.

Amid all the preparations, it is good to remember the kindnesses of God in having brought us this far. He will never desert us, or forsake us. His mercies flow in every morning, noon and night, and His perfection make us hope and long for the day when all wrongs will be made right, when all the tears will be wiped away, and He is acknowledged by all as King of kings and Lord of lords.
We're not too sure we'll be posting again this year, with a wedding in 2 weeks.... but, then again, one never knows!Lisa Hellwighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07093190336934995934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5702633416092901004.post-54897434546803189022016-11-04T18:43:00.004-04:002016-11-04T18:43:57.787-04:00A Glorious Messpost by Mama H.
A few of many of Benaiah's paper projects!
The old saying "where there's smoke, there's progress" holds true here, only I might amend the saying to "Where there's paper scraps, there's Benaiah.... working on some more paper models!"

Sometimes, I get through all of them, plus a couple dozen others. Other years, I read only one or two from my list, plus several dozen others. Last year, I only read one of the books on my list, but I went through so many others. Many of these I outlined and took notes from, and several I have even used to apply to my life, to effect change. A few were to provoke thought. Some, were simply a good story. There's a place for each of those. Not every book has to be practically applicable in order to benefit.

Of course, the Book of books remains my top read every year. And every year, it precipitates the greatest change! Zephaniah, Matthew, Colossians, Ezekiel.... all leading me upward, to Him Who inhabits its pages.

My list for this year?

A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller

The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller

Onward by Russell Moore

Fierce Convictions by Karen Swallow Prior

The Art of Work by Jeff Goins

Lit! by Tony Reinke

Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan

Heaven by Randy Alcorn

Paradise Lost by John Milton

The Pilgrims Regress by C. S. Lewis

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

and

Through Many Dangers, The Story of John Newton by Brian Edwards

A bit of this, and some of that. I'm sure I'll be throwing in a book on the philosophy of teaching, and perhaps some historical fiction, plenty of history and more biography. And I still need to finish A Tale of Two Cities, which I started but didn't finish, along with a few others that suffered the same fate.

What are you reading in 2016? What did you read in 2015? What did you like, love, hate? And why? What would you recommend? What made you think? Laugh? Weep?
I'd love to hear from you.

I'll be writing it still for a few more months, the '5' marked over hard with a sloppy, unnatural '6.'

So I must ask this question: Does time seem to accelerate as we age, or are our thoughts and experiences so varied and full and rich that they use up more of the 24-hour day we are each allotted, so leaving us with far less empty space?

While this year was quite full, the next promises to continue at high speed. And I'm not sure how to approach it in such a way that I would do better. It is all in the approach, the mindset....
We all have giftings, talents, callings. Do we use them for the right purpose? Do we even know what they are? Do we drift through days, reacting to things that present themselves to us, or do we direct ourselves to drive through the events and open doors God puts on our path?
Drift or drive? Is there a middle ground? Is there a time to be still and simply be? To listen and not to do? To think and be quiet? To marvel in the simple but profound Truth?

For me, that is the start of my day, but by the middle of the day, too often I find myself swept up in the bustle, with no time to linger, gaze and contemplate. I do not savor as I ought. And so, I forget or miss the sweet tidings of the fleeting minutes of the day. I am blind to the blessings and benighted by the blur.
Words for this year include deliberation, intention, carefulness, mindfulness, savor, and wonder.
May 2016 be a year of noticing all those little things, whose sum make up 99% of life... the big "impressive" events only a tiny fraction.

A very joy-filled New Year to you, friends and family. Thank you for reading. Thank you for walking with us. Thank you for being a part of that 99%. May we all discover the middle ground between the overwhelming drive and the uninspiring drift. May 2016 be a year of knowing, not only our gifts and callings, but the Gift, and the One Who calls.

May we each rest in Him, while we reflect and respond, pray and press on, wonder and work.

Several days ago, Arianne took Benaiah out to the Science and Natural History Museum in Raleigh. It was a gift from her to him for his 8th birthday.

Looks like they had an enjoyable time!

And what's a museum outing on a hot summer's day without.... ice cream? Not quite as tasty as when enjoying a cone on a bear's back!

Fun times for brother and sister.

Thanks Arianne... Benaiah really enjoyed his time with you, while the older children hiked Grandfather Mountain with Daddy!

And I, well, I cleaned and organized closets. Exciting stuff. Really. All alone. In a quiet house for 5 full hours!
It was almost surreal.

Next up... hopefully some Grandfather Mountain shots.Lisa Hellwighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07093190336934995934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5702633416092901004.post-46493815777986845222015-08-24T21:02:00.000-04:002015-08-24T21:02:40.615-04:00We have a new 8-year-old!

Benaiah requested a Rubik's cube for his birthday. He received one, and shortly afterward philosophized : A Rubik's cube is much like our heads. When it's solved, it's like having a clear head. When it's all jumbled up, it's like being crazy and not knowing what we're talking about.

Wise observations for one so young. May we all have solved cubes! ;-) Lisa Hellwighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07093190336934995934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5702633416092901004.post-60660833694044466772015-06-30T05:08:00.002-04:002015-06-30T05:08:44.663-04:00One of my Favorite Quotes

From Mark Buchanan's book "Hidden in Plain Sight" :

"Real love loves us, not just as we are, but so that we can become what we are meant to be."

This is a very helpful book, an easy read, though, if you're like me, you'll stop and chew a lot, and will take your time going through it, to let it sink in. I've written lists of "thinks".... thoughts that this book has provoked, things that need changing, especially in me.

Remarkably, the changes are actually being effected!

2 Peter 1:1-11 has never come alive so robustly for me. I hope you will take the time to read this book. As one of modernity's better contributions, it is well worth it.Lisa Hellwighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07093190336934995934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5702633416092901004.post-79632586162280990172015-06-17T15:12:00.002-04:002015-06-17T15:12:36.998-04:00Wordful Wednesday!A conversation with my youngest:

Benaiah : (while running his trucks and tractors across the floor) I'm going to own a yellow Mustang one day....

Mommy : Those are very expensive.

B: Well, maybe I'll be a millionaire, then.

M: If you work hard, maybe.

B: Well, I'll make good investments and build developments....
(his voice trailed off as he thought about his future, smiling confidently to himself.)

I'm glad my 7 year old is thinking about his future! And gratified to see he knows he needs to work hard and smart for those things he wants. Let's hope he aspires to higher things than yellow Mustangs! ;-)
Christianna thoroughly enjoyed this gift from the Lord. She'd always dreamed of waltzing at a ball, in a lovely gown. Last December, we attended the Christmas Ball, but, sadly, we have no pictures. It was a wonderful formal event where her dream came true.
Timothy turned 22 today, and, as a proud mother, thank God for my son. We had the usual dinner of favorite foods.... but this time, as he didn't tell me what he wanted for dinner, I got to pick favorites of the whole family. I did include some seafood for him, as he loves shrimp and mussels. Cheesecake is everyone's favorite, and chocolate is on nearly everyone's list of preferred treats.

How often do we think on the depth of Christ's amazing love for us? What did that Love do for us? Do we really understand the sacrifice in that ultimate act of faithfulness? What does our love, for Him or for others, look like?

Well, I have an answer for that last question : puny and pitiful.

On Thursday evening, our church held a Maundy Thursday service. Our speaker shared with us a few points regarding the scene in the Garden on the night Jesus was betrayed.

John 13:1 tells us that :
Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

After the disciples had witnessed His love to them at the Passover feast, they went with Him to the Garden of Gethsemane. Had they realized what He'd just shown them?

Jesus asked them simply to watch and pray. They couldn't do this. They fell asleep. Did those disciples sense the urgency of His quiet request?

What does Gethsemane describe for us?

Jesus' crushing sorrow : He was being separated from His Father. The Trinity, an indivisible Union, had never been separated in all eternity. This point marked a pivot in the 'history of eternity.' Christ chose to endure this.... for us!

Jesus' humble submission : He was heard because of His reverence to His Father. "...for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." (John 8:29) "For I have come down from Heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." (John 6:38) Christ is the path to the Father....our Father.

Jesus' unwavering concern : Even in His darkest hour, Jesus is concerned for His disciple. He demonstrates His faithful shepherding, concern for their temptation. "Watch and pray," He speaks to them, taking the time to disciple His disciples.

Jesus' strength and resolve : Standing in our place, He
moves toward His captors, moving forward toward His death, pushing
things along. He set His face like flint. (Isaiah 50:1-10) His time had come. Gethsemane is the Holy of Holies of
Christ in His time on earth.

What wondrous Love this is!

A holy God demands that perfect justice be paid for our sin. His Son steps in, sorrowful, humble, concerned and resolved to take our place. He endures unmitigated wrath as punishment for our crimes. He lays down His life for those He loves.

What ought to be our response?

 Hushed worship.

Around our home, pie is certainly appreciated: apple, blueberry, pumpkin, coconut, strawberry-rhubarb, chocolate-hazelnut, pecan, peach.... well, it goes on for a while.

But, a little known fact about our family is that Pi is also greatly valued: 3.1415926..... well, it seems that this Pi goes on for a while as well. In fact, Pi goes on forever, as far as we know. I do not believe any computer has been able to find the "end" of pi. (Just as no one in our family could ever find the end to his enjoyment of pie!)

Today just happens to be 3/14/15.... and at 9:26, we'll have the first seven decimal places of Pi: 3.1415926 !
Don't worry: if you miss 9:26 a.m., you get another chance at 9:26 p.m.! (Such worries!)

The nature of pi and of God who created it are very much alike.
Did you know:

Pi cannot be expressed as a common fraction. It can only be approximated. Can we ever come anywhere near to "defining" God? We can only approximate Him (and poorly, at that).

Pi's decimal representation never ends. God is infinite.

In fact, that decimal part of Pi never even settles into any permanent repeating pattern. While God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, we cannot know what He will do or when. We cannot understand Him, or predict His thoughts.

Yet, Pi is a wonderful number: it is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Any circle, large, small, or in-between. God is Wonderful, having stamped his image on the human race, and left his fingerprints all over creation. (Try looking up the wonders of the Fibonacci numbers in pine cones and sunflowers!)From the smallest atomic particle to the vastness of the universe, God's signature is readily apparent.

Here in the Hellwig family, we love Pi. In fact, years ago, it was a fun family challenge to memorize Pi to 7 digits. I can remember the older ones, when they were little, coming to the dinner table with their recitations of Pi, proudly rattling off 3.1415926 as fast as their tongues could go!

Here in the Hellwig family, we also love pie! In sure Hellwig tradition, Christianna will be making us a Pi-pie today. View a post about our past Pi-day celebration here.

Of course, hugs are always appropriate for celebrations, but, what better way to celebrate the love, the glory and majesty, the masterful genius of the Creator of Pi by giving someone you love a big, circular hug? So, give a hug. And have some pie with your Pi! And praise the Lord of the Universe for His unspeakable gifts.

(Did you know that the word "Universe" comes from the Latin words for "one" and "word"? With One Word He spoke, and it was all created! The Word is Jesus! I love how God has embedded His presence in our very languages and semantics! I do believe I could write a whole other post about this...)

Stay tuned for a picture of Christianna's Apple Pi!
